Editor Development / Re: QtSphere IDE 0.2.5
I'm trying to get this built on my Ubuntu system (after having installed Qt 4, Qt 5 and Qt Creator) but I get stuck at the screen displayed in the attachment.

Compiling from source worked (after installing some multimedia and multimediawidget libraries), but the IDE seems to currently just crash on an "Error loading penguin.rss" and a subsequent segmentation fault. I guess that's still hardcoded in at this point.

(The README needs updating, by the way! Make sure to list required libraries and ./build/QtSphere should be ./build/QtSphereIDE. :)

Hey, using 3D modeling software for pre-rendered graphics isn't something I've seen a lot of in Sphere! I'm thinking that by using Blender you can do some interesting animation - like having the tiles slowly change their perspective relative to the ship (by cycling through different animation frames) as you zoom past them. :)

Tyrian is one of my favorite shmups so seeing something inspired by it certainly makes me happy. Although I like playing it with the mouse :)

I'm old and don't like change haha...

I am neither. I'd really like to not be stuck in the technological stone age but new tech isn't cheap.
This is kind of curious to me, as more recent computers have been cheaper and cheaper while easily offering the basic specs that engines like miniSphere require these days. As an example, I'm getting by nicely with a refurbished (albeit fairly high-end for its time) laptop from 2012 for about 250 euros. There were options that would have worked for about 150 as well.

This is just coming from my own experience when really looking around for something half-decent when I barely had any budget myself and found something more than decent though. In all, I don't mean to pry or be rude but I figure that if you looked around enough you'd find something pretty affordable for your needs with miniSphere (and just general PC usability, naturally). I have no clue, of course, what your own situation is, what your options are, if you are in any sort of position to save up for that, et cetera.

In my experience, it's fairly easy to compile miniSphere as long as you get the development libraries for latest Allegro/LibMNG/OGG/zlib (and I'm probably forgetting a few) from the default repository on Ubuntu at least. Certainly far from the nightmare that compiling original Sphere was. :)

I'll say this looks similar to Tyrian in more ways than one... Looks great, time to play!

Edit: yup, this was a lot of fun for a while. It wasn't immediately obvious what upgraded what without referring back to your post, but it's fun to blast through all of the ships like this. One downside is how quickly the difficulty suddenly ramps up on the level with the big boss ships though, and that once you die, you start over all the way from the beginning instead of just the start of the level.

No, I got that, I'm just trying to figure out what the significance of using that song in particular is.  Unless it's just because it's a really goofy song?  I'm confused.
There's no significance, I just love that he used one of those songs that happens to be very silly.

I had to get used to Ctrl+PgUp and Ctrl+PgDown myself because some programs on Linux support only those. So luckily, that means I was used to both anyway... I'm glad that your editor supports both by default. :)

This I don't get... You only need one hand to press Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab while PgUp and PgDown are all the way on the other side of the keyboard. I guess you use right Ctrl a lot? :P And I guess it saves one extra keystroke.

Anyway, I'm actually quite stoked on the recent progress on this. Been waiting for Sphere to truly enter cross-platform territory; not just with its engine but with its editor as well!

This is very neat. I played a little bit of adventure.asm.

I guess in a way this adds compatibility to a whole bunch of (simple) games to miniSphere all at once! :P

Just a note: I tried updating ElkArte to the latest version but something seems to have gone wrong. I reverted the update but we've lost useful plugins for now. Will attempt to fix this once I figure out how to get the new version of ElkArte installed. Registrations are disabled until I figure it out. Sorry for the inconvenience.

This is great! I've noticed a trend where entirely too many people rely on Sfxr or Bfxr for their sound effects, making the sounds always sound the same. It makes a game lose its uniqueness characteristic a little.* So it's very nice to have some libraries of sound effects readily available like this.

Additionally to your links, the Spherical Downloads Drive also has a bunch of sounds and music readily available for any game projects. Those are developed by the community members over here, and are available over here.

*To be fair, I also used Bfxr in Sir Boingers but that's before everyone started doing it. I'd replace them if I still worked on that game though.

That sounds less like development hell and more like a forced hiatus! It's nice that you're still keeping busy by thinking of new ideas, however. Can't wait to see what you'll show us once you're able to continue developing the game. :)
