Started reading Homestuck (spoilerz ahoy)
Started reading Homestuck four or five days ago. I'm a little ways into Act III, Rose has just found the Skaianet hub server thingy in the laboratory under her dead cat's mausoleum. Decided to post some thoughts I've had along the way, and that I'm having now. Why here and not the MSPA forum? I won't be able to avoid spoilers there.

• Fell in love with Rose in Act I before we knew who she was. I type using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation in chat, too!

• In Act II, when we first got to know her and her family sitch and she was talking about how her mother does all sorts of stuff out of spite (like buying her stuff and hanging up her note) I thought "she's probably wrong, her mom probably does it out of honest affection, and Rose just sees this as bothersome." Nope, her mom's really that nasty, lol.

• Speaking of which, I can't remember why or which page caused me to think this, but I had the idea that Rose's mom might actually be herself from the future. The end of Act II, when Rosemom opens the secret hatch, falls in line with that, because she doesn't seem the type to save someone else, but if Rose is her in the past, obviously she'd save her(self).

• I'm reeeeally curious as to what John's dad went to do when he ran out of the house for a few minutes early in Act I. John dismissed it as "probably going to buy more baking supplies," but I doubt it. I think Johndad is probably some kind of secret agent working against the Imps or Skaianet or SBURB or whatever.

• Speaking of which, I wonder who created SBURB. Until the end of Act II, I suspected it might be GG, which would be how she knows so much about it.

• Why in the world does John loathe baked goods and sweets so much? Kids usually love cookies and stuff. Weird.

• John's Pesterchum handle doesn't make any sense, and the other three kids' do. tentacleTherapist: Rose is into Cthulhu and psychoanalysis. turntechGodhead: Dave is into music and is egotistical. gardenGnostic: Jade is into gardening and the gnostic thing is obviously a mystical reference to her powers. But John's handle is ectoBiologist? Ecto would seem to suggest ghosts, and while he's dealing with Nannasprite, it's not like John himself is particularly interested in ghosts. Or biology. His handle makes no sense at all. I suspect there's a good reason for this. If I were him, I'd've chosen something like filmieTrickster (love of movies and pranks) or something.

• I didn't like Rose or Dave's names at first, but they've grown on me. But I really dislike Jade's name. "Jade" just doesn't suit her the tiniest bit whatsoever. "Jade" is the name of a sultry assassin or amazon woman or something; it doesn't fit her at all. Her last name is actually a perfect first name, though: Harley. She looks much more like a Harley than a Jade.

• Regardless, I think Jade is Nanna. That she grows up, travels back in time and ends up as Nanna. They're the only characters with those buckteeth...
http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002327
http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002668
...and Jade even has a picture of what we can presume is a relative in her chest...
http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002703
...with those same teeth. Plus, Jade and Nanna both have prognostificatory powers. Oh, and when John first found his dad's copy of Colonel Sassacre's text in the safe? He remarked that it looked super-ancient. And Nanna left a note in the beginning that said the book had a long journey. So what if, the newer copy of the text that John has is the same book! He holds onto it, eventually Jade comes to possess it, keeps it with her through her whole life until she travels back in time and becomes the person we know as Nanna, and writes that note in the front and gives it to Johndad.

I admit the logic's a bit stretched, especially the bucktooth thing. Saying that Jade becomes Nanna 'cause they're the only two characters with buckteeth is like saying Dave becomes his Bro because they're the only two characters with shades. Still, I have a hunch.

• Speaking of Dave, I think he'll maybe get ice powers in the future. Every time Jade talks about him to someone else she says "he's soooo coooool!" Given her predilection for prognostication, that might be more than a compliment. Especially since it's not true, lol.

• Fell in love with Jade from her first Pesterlog appearance, too. "not much sup with you!! bro! hehehe" *dies*

• "You got us Matthew! Your smooth talking exposed our latent racism! Damn you are good!" XD

• I've actually developed a fondness for and interest in Harry Anderson from reading Homestuck.

• Before we were properly introduced to Fetch Modi, Dave mocked John for using the Stack Modus, suggesting he "bone up on his data structures." But as we see, you just "use" a Modus card to use it, you don't actually have to have a theoretical knowledge of computer science, so WTF was he talking about? I'll chalk this up to the author not yet having decided how Fetch Modi worked at that point.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002107
XD so hard.

• I didn't realize until just yesterday (after making it more than two Acts into Homestuck) that most of the crazy words in Homestuck are real words, not just made up nonsense -- atheneum, soused, uh...can't think of others, but I know there're a bunch.

• Jade's Magic Eightball is obviously not incorrect, it's just oblique...
http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002704
I feel quite certain that "not exactly" is a perfectly accurate response to the question "is it my friend John's birthday today." Time travel weirdness tends to make statements superpositions of truth values, rather than simply true or false.

I wonder precisely how the Eight Ball is correct, though. It's "not exactly" John's birthday today could mean a number of things. Maybe Jade isn't in the same spacetime as John; maybe her weird island is in some kind of spacetime bubble or whatevs. Maybe it's not truly John's birthday 'cause he doesn't technically have one, again, due to time travel funkiness. So many possibilities.

• Oh, I looked up the coordinates for the Wandering Vagabond's station thingy he was in and the other available coordinates near the end of Act II, and figured out that Rose's house is in Rainbow Falls in Parishville in NY, that WV's in the same location in the future (413 years in the future, notably), that John's house is in Maple Valley, Washington and that Jade lives on an island in the south pacific near Baker Island and Howland Island. Interesting places, actually.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howland_Island
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_Island

• John's location actually gives a precise street address. Wonder how many Homestuck fans have visited and/or called. I hope that's the authors house. Rose's location doesn't give an address, but shows a house when you zoom in all the way on Google Maps. Again, hope nobody's getting harassed by zealous fans.

• I think maybe the world of Homestuck that we've seen so far is actually a computer simulation, or in a computer world or something. Which would explain the immaterial gaming abstractions present in everyday life, like the Captchalogue, and the SBURB game's ability to manipulate physical reality. Maybe "Ascending" through the Seven Gates allows entities from the game world to enter the real world.

• The following items have dropped off the platform in the Middle where John's house currently is, and I feel confident they'll become important in the future -- John's dad's car containing the SBURB Server CD and Jade's birthday present for John; that crumpled hat; the "Apple" cruxite dowel. Probably something else I can't remember.

• I wonder if Jade's actually responsible for organizing the whole scenario of Homestuck, just to give John and everyone a fun, exciting experience.

• God I love the Pesterlogs. The author has a really amazing knack for characterization; each character's personality comes through so perfectly and so uniquely. I have my browser set to automatically set colors, so I'm not even seeing the color differences and I feel that way. Actually, lemme take a screencap.

• "obama made it so that no one gives a shit about black presidents in movies anymore" XD I never realized that, but it's so true!

• The author's great at convoluted prose.
"You wonder if this rain will ever let up. It's driven since the month began, perhaps long enough to forget its purpose. It no longer even knows to assuage fire. Somewhere a zealous god threads these strings between the clouds and the earth, preparing for a symphony it fears impossible to play. And so it threads on, and on, delaying the raise of the conductor's baton.

How you hate this season."

"What marvelous creatures they are. What a daring dream, to combine the finest qualities of humanity with the elegance and nobility of the animal kingdom. How you wish you could know their world. To hear one night those muted pawpads traipse up your stairs. A low but friendly growl unsettles your slumber, and as the sopor seeps from your eyes they detect a sharp pair of ears cutting moonlight. A mysterious wolven tongue invites. Wouldn't these ears suit you? Would not this proud long snout assist you in the hunt?

No need to answer. Words slough from the busy mind like a useless dead membrane as a more visceral sapience takes over. Something simpler is in charge now, a force untouched by the concerns and burdens of the upright, that farcical yoke the bipedal tow. It now drives you through the midnight brush, your paws whisking through creepers, unearthing with each bold stomp bright odors demanding investigation. But not for long, as you and your new friend must claim the night with piercing howls moonward.

You eat a weird bug and don't even care."

• I'll admit that I'm abjured by the fact that Jade is a furry.

• As is tradition for consumers of weird fiction, while accepting the crazier aspects of Homestuck, I feel compelled to nitpick a relatively minor transgression upon logic.

"NANNASPRITE: It is where we are now! A realm that is a ring of pure void, dividing light and darkness. It turns in the thick of The Incipisphere, a place untouched by the flow of time in your universe."

A realm cannot be untouched by time, cannot be timeless. If it were timeless, everything would be static, nothing would ever change, you wouldn't be able to move or even think -- you'd be in perfect, absolute stasis.

• GG: oh but rose i dont think he meant anything like that by it!!
GG: you see not everybody always means the opposite of what they say the way you and dave always do
TT: Maybe.
(God I love Rose.)

• Dave's Bro's obsession with phallic, rumpusey puppets is beyond disturbing. I honestly feel like Dave, I'm just gonna wig out if I have to see too many more of those things.

• "kill monsters, get grist" < How is that not a meme?

• Oh, I noticed all the people Jade has blocked in her Pesterchum, and have figured out that they're the Trolls, whom I know of because I've used the internet within the past four years. I didn't expect them to be part of the "real world" in Homestuck. Then again, since WV was communicating with John from the year 2422, I suppose it's possible carcinoGeneticist was communicating with Jade from another dimension or something.

• I get the feeling Jade's grandfather might be Colonel Sassacre.

• Examine can of custard.
The can clearly reads "MUSTARD", a fact of which you were perfectly well aware.
Laughed so hard. I understand many of the "commands" in Homestuck are reader-suggested. Presumably when the comic was active, you'd post in the message board to suggest courses of action from the current strip.

• I'm not thrilled about Jade's marksmanship any more than her furrydom. In fact, she almost seems like a totally different character in person than in the chatlogs. There's numerous scenes in which she gets easily pissed the way the other kids do, and the narrative describes her being annoyed and "hating" things as often as the other kids.

• Thus far, no two human characters have exchanged words in person, only via chat programs and such. Wonder if that'll continue through the series.

• I really do wonder if Jade's house is in the same "time" as John and the others. The "WV: Ascend" ending of Act II was a bit confusing. SBURB hurls a meteor at that location, like, near when the earth forms, and the island grows out of it and that frog temple, and Jade ends up living there, but there's ANOTHER meteor about to hit the same location? It's just narratively confusing to have two important meteors impact the same location. Unless it's the same meteor and there's some real funky time wonkiness going on.

• Presumably Dave lives in Austin, Texas and is at the epicenter of that second-largest comet about to impact that Rose saw on the SC monitor.

• Oh! Remember, Rose said in her GameFAQs FAQ that the pre-punched card seems to vary from player-to-player? John's was an apple, and as the end of Act II showed us, a tree grew from the place where his meteor impacted his house, and dropped that apple-like station thing the Peregrine Mendicant is currently in. I wonder if the SBURB meteors are all seeds like that, that produce the same thing on your pre-punched card.

Presumably, nobody's gonna read all that, but it was still fun to write. I'll post more thoughts in this topic as they occur to me. I'll use this as my Homestuck Readalong thingy!

I don't follow homestuck, so I can't relate or comment. :P

Hehe, no prob. Lord English reads Homestuck, he'll be interested in my ramblings. Even if not, I can post this all here for now, and copy-paste it to the Homestuck forums once I catch up.

(I do recommend reading the comic to both of you, though. It's sort of like ABC's LOST, only a buttload more informal, and stuff actually gets answered.)

More stuff!

• I wonder how the kids all know each other. They have very different personalities, and presumably they didn't meet in real life. We've seen Dave and John visit the MSPA website, so they probably met through the forum.

• Speaking of which, WTF?!
http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002731
John is an MSPA comic character in Homestuck?! This lends support to my "Jade is not in the same universe/timescape/whatever as the others." She's communicating with them from another time or dimension the way WV tried controlling John.

• Oh, and I've been wondering which of the kids corresponds to which role Nannasprite was talking about when she first expo'd at John.

Knight of Time: I'd assume this is Dave, since he uses a katana and is the only thing remotely resembling a knight.

Witch of Space: 'Witch' automatically makes me think of Rose. Plus, she did just find a Transportalizer. Maybe she'll make copious use of it.

Seer of Light: Presumably Jade, since she's all psychic and jazz. "Light" seems like a random thing, though.

Heir of Breath: See, this doesn't make sense. Granted, I have no idea what it means, but it doesn't seem like it'll fit John regardless.

John just seems...different than the other kids. When the Mendicant tried manipulating Jade he couldn't, WV was locked out of manipulating Dave or Rose, but he could mess with John just fine. John also seems to have a weaker grasp on the nature of his world than the other kids (not really understanding what a Captchalogue is, or how it works, or anything related to the game-like aspects of the Homestuck world).

And narratively, as I said, his Pesterchum name doesn't fit him at all, it's totally random.

I wonder if he is...wrong. Out of place. Maybe he'll die and be replaced by another protagonist, or maybe another kid will be introduced to be the "fourth" and he'll end up being something totally different (and, as the protagonist, probably better).

• I wonder if you, as the player, have a role in Homestuck, too. Like, if you're unwittingly being a character in the Homestuck "game" just by reading. Or maybe at the end we'll zoom out to reveal that the "player" wasn't you the reader, but some specific character.

(Oh, and check out my upload. This is how I see the internet.)

I'll admit I skimmed over most of that, but indeed, Homestuck is awesome.  I should warn you, however, in case you hadn't noticed the newsposts under the comic: At present, the author is in the middle of a massive hiatus, with it not looking like it's going to start back up for quite a while still.  So um, you might want to pace yourself!

I have to agree with you on the characterization.  Homestuck's characters are some of most well-developed, well-rounded characters around.  What's going to really blow your mind, however, is once the trolls start getting their proper character development.  Every single one is built on a stereotype, yet they all still manage to be very interesting characters.

Oh, and there's a reason for John's oddball Pesterchum handle, but explaining it would be a fairly large spoiler. :D  Let's just say the climax of Act 4 is where the "real" story kicks off.  This is going to be hard to believe right now, but everything up till then is just prologue.

I actually started reading it and found it hilarious. It's actually really masterfully done story-wise, despite the representational style.

I'd love to talk about homestuck but my understanding of the timeline is rooted in the order of events chronologically and not when they were told narrative wise, so I refrain from talking or else I bleed spoilers

What's so great about it is how it starts off silly and inconsequential and things slowly but steadily escalate without you even realizing it until suddenly you're asking yourself "How did this go from a kid messing around in his room to THIS?!"  And despite such a huge dynamic range in scale, the transition is nonetheless seamless.

I think the creator was wondering the same thing after a while. That is often how such things go :P

I read it for a good while until I got bored. Never bothered to remember any of the characters afterwards. It's just a silly, over-convoluted thing I enjoyed for a while.

I also think Problem Sleuth is underrated. I like MS Paint Adventures as a whole, and Homestuck is hogging the show a bit too much. :P

Reading Problem Sleuth, which had the original "text adventure" style gameplay, where readers submitted their own commands, it makes a lot more sense why Homestuck starts out so crazy- the author was segueing them from "crazy antics" to "realistic game"- hence why things are so stupid in the beginning but come together.

That tends to happen when a single story goes on for 5 years.  Problem Sleuth only lasted a year.  In any case, I was never a big fan of PS.  Too many wacky hijinks. Granted, it was flawlessly executed, but even so I prefer the more serious style of Homestuck.  PS doesn't take itself seriously enough (or at all, really) for my tastes so I could never muster much interest in it.  Besides, I'm a sucker for sprawling, epic storylines--it's part of why I like JRPGs so much.

(Radnen! Don't read these things, it'll spoil stuff for you! Skip down to where I quote you (i.e. also skip my response to Lord English, because also spoilers).)

Jeeze! I keep accurately predicting things! And I'm usually pretty dense. I never usually see plot twists and stuff coming. I'm up to Act 4 now, just started it. I predicted that Nannasprite would write her inscription in John's copy of Sassacre's text. Thus, the ancient-looking copy he found in his dad's safe is, indeed, that same copy. I predicted Snowman was a woman (though I thought Slick didn't wanna kill her 'cause she's a damn what he's sweet on).

My comment about the pre-punched apple card's relation to the thing that grew from John's meteor was right (because we see in the Act 3 ender that Rose's thing is a soda bottle, and clearly the giant cylinder thing WV rode on is supposed to be like a cork). I've covered so many pages since I last posted, I can't remember everything I predicted, but I'll probably do another read-thru at some point and remember them.

I'm keeping a text file with lots of random thoughts about the series as I read. Maybe I should organize and publish them at some point. Tumblr's pretty easy to set up...

Here's a few comments I feel like saying out loud...

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002880
• Becquerel's a dog? That does NOT bode well. You know the rule about dogs in fiction. They always die. The only reason for dogs to even exist in stories is so they can die and tug on our heartstrings. No, this does not bode well at all.

On the bright side, the end of that animation is perhaps the cutest thing that has ever existed. I gotta learn how to make animated gifs so I can make a "Good Dog! Best Friend!" gif ^_^

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002903
• Uhh...........o.......kay? This...really, really threw me for a loop.

So...John's like, totally fracking psycho? I noticed that the kids never really talk to their guardians, and I thought it was just a contrivance of the medium. But now I'm getting this impression that John literally never actually speaks out loud to his father 'cause he (John) has some kind of severe autistic thing or something and basically has no human interaction outside of Pesterchum. And his dad sorta-heartbreakingly tries to communicate with him by buying all that clown stuff.

This is pretty disturbing, actually. The "Lame Kid" sign is particularly unsettling.

Also, I gotta say, I don't like this sort of thing. Where something that was previously unknowable is thrown at us like this. Even Rose's screenshots in the first part of her GameFAQs FAQ didn't show the grafitti. If it had, I wouldn't've noticed it.

See, the problem with something like this is that now, we can't trust the narrative. Anything we see might be a lie, might be covered up by our protagonist's fractured psyche. That sucks. I'll now always have it in the back of my mind anytime something new or cool or something comes up that, "well, maybe this'll turn out to be fake, too. Oh well."

Yeah, I really don't like sudden revelations like this.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002923
• I wonder if John's dad's room really was normal. Maybe it was actually filled with bloody dismembered corpses or something, but John blocked that out, too. See, ugh, we can't trust anything anymore.

Well, presumably whatever's going on at Jade's, Dave's and Rose's houses are real, as well as all the stuff in the future and past, but if John's involved, there's no telling if what we're seeing is real or true or means anything anymore, even if we're seeing John through another character's eyes.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002926
• So Jade's golden dream palace is some kind of moon that orbits Skaia? Called Prospit? Or is this that golden place above John's house in The Middle? Or both?

• And I don't have a link, but a later (or earlier?) flash animation shows us that Jade doesn't actually have psychic powers, she just learns about the future and past and other timelines and stuff during eclipses with her "dream moon" and Skaia.

Of course, that could be a misdirection -- maybe she gets her visions from that and is still psychic in some other way.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003035
"it's hard to thank you enough for your friendship over the years. heck, if it weren't for you i wouldn't even have met rose and dave, so that is like, THREE TIMES the friendship! that is almost like, TOO MUCH FRIENDSHIP."

In my last post, I was wondering how the kids met. This leads me to believe that Jade orchestrated their friendship. She likely befriended each of the other three, then introduced them all to each other. Probably because of her visions.

Psychic powers or no, she's still reeeeally mysterious.

• Speaking of those letters...
http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002991
lolwut? John even hand-writes in lower-case? Also, aww. Heartwarming moment :)

Yeah, see, I'm thinking more and more the Homestuck kids are all really, severely psychologically messed up shut-ins with no friends or lives whatsoever. All they have...
*fights back manly tears*
...is each other ( T_T)

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=002984
• "It's like what are you made of time."
Hah! Probably! If I'm right about him being the Knight of Time, that is. Which I think I am ;)

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003055
Okay, from our very own Lord English's response in the username topic, I know that Lord English is some kind of big bad evil thing that's summoned upon the destruction of a universe, then teleports back to a random point in its past, such that if you encounter Lord English in your timeline, you know your universe is doomed.

I've actually had a few other things spoiled while searching for stuff on Deviantart or Google or whatever, but it's no big deal. First because knowing these things ahead of time somehow doesn't diminish their awesomeness, and second because Homestuck is so insanely large, no one spoiler could possibly have series-ruining implications.

• I wonder if Spades Slick is Jack Noir. They both have a hatred of silly hats, they're both clearly the same species, they look alike, have those barcodes.

• The future-people like Wandering Vagabond also have those barcodes. It's clear that the WV et. al. are "imps" (<-- still no official name for those buggers).

• It's worth noting that Spades Slick et. al. bleed and die while the imps John's dealing with disappear leaving behind Grist. So maybe they're a more evolved version. Or maybe their species behaves differently in The Middle than in the real world.

I wonder, maybe John and his friends fail to...do whatever they're supposed to be doing, and the Imps win and colonize the destroyed Earth, and that eventually becomes first the Wandering Vagabond's world then Spades Slick's world, in time.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003116
I wonder if "the Felt" are called the felt as a reference to the "fabric" of spacetime.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003139
Okay, here's my theory -- Becquerel is Lord English. Supporting evidence...
1) In Jade's one dreamworld animation, we see Becquerel's birth, wherein he rises from the pool of lava that made Jade's island millions of years in the past.
2) That meteor was spat out by a SBURB spirograph. That fits with the "summoning Lord English" thing I already know about.
3) Bec tries to stop Jade from messing around in the ruins. Presumably because the kids are destined to defeat Lord English, so he doesn't want her getting her hands on SBURB and joining the party, so to speak.
4) And he doesn't/can't just kill her, because that'd create a time paradox, which maybe are part of the "glitches and exploits in spacetime" which are the only ways to kill him.
5) Bec clearly has insane spacetime powers, so that fits.
6) Bec's appearance as a dog means his storyline has to end tragically, and Bec ending up being the Big Bad of the entire Homestuck series would certainly fit.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003168
Wow, okay. Kill Snowman, end the universe. Oh! She's not a green dude, she's an Imp-type guy. Or gal. Like WV and Slick and Noir. Interesting...

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003183
Why would they fight each other? That makes precisely zero sense @_@

• I noticed the stabbed eye change soon after it happened.

And lolled hard when it was acknowledged in the story. I did the same thing with C4 not being explosive, heh. The author's one smart feller.

How do they know about the Kool-Aid man...?

Hey, her shirt shouldn't be cycling through all these designs. Remember? She set it to only cycle through three of them (then added a fourth via the dreambot while she was dreaming). Did someone reset them?

Not hard to believe at all. I happen to know there's over 7,000 pages, and I just started Act 4, and that's only around 1,300. Also not hard to believe because John et. al. are playing the Homestuck Beta, which implies there'll be a Full Release.

Though since the Beta has already managed to destroy Earth and create untold time loopies and whatever else, I shudder to think what a Full Release might do.

(P.S. if you skimmed through this post, too, make sure to read my thing about Becquerel, just Ctrl-F "3139"

Obviously I don't want you to tell me if I'm right, I just think it'd be cool if I was right and you knew that and then later, when I found out, I came back and said, "I was right!" and you were all, "Yeah, I knew, but I didn't say anything! Cool for you!")

I actually started reading it and found it hilarious. It's actually really masterfully done story-wise, despite the representational style.

Yaaay! You started reading it!

But...d-d-despite? The art style's one of the best things! So unique, instantly-recognizable. Most webcomics look pretty much like every other webcomic.

(Hey, you should post some predictions sometime, too. I wasn't around while Homestuck was actively being released, so it'll be neat to speculate with a fellow newcomer. Er, well, I was around like I existed, I just wasn't reading the comic. Game. Thing.)

I'd love to talk about homestuck but my understanding of the timeline is rooted in the order of events chronologically and not when they were told narrative wise, so I refrain from talking or else I bleed spoilers

Yeah, I'm going at a pretty breakneck speed here and I'm already having trouble remembering when (i.e. in which Act) things took place.

I hope it stays relatively silly, though. That's one of the great things about Homestuck that I'm enjoying so far -- the characters just act like normal people, not all fakey-dramatic the way characters in stories normally do. If all this crazy stuff started happening to one of us, we'd probably pretty much talk and act like the Homestuck kids do.

It's like, in proper dramas, a lot of times, the only reason the events seem to have emotional weight and intrigue and stuff is because the characters act like everything's so super dramatic and important. And nobody acts that way in real life! Most dramas are only dramtic because the characters act completely differently than people do in real life. But Homestuck manages to be obsession-inducingly intriguing without resorting to such cheap tactics.

Another thing I noticed -- thus far (just started Act 4), Homestuck has been devoid of death and romance (well, not counting the murderific Intermission), which are two cheap ways to score points with an audience that the vast majority of stories use.

Was it the Intermission? I didn't really like it very much :/

It's the characters. I wasn't invested in and really didn't care about the Midnight Crew. I trust that the events it depicted and concepts it introduced will be important to the story, but 250+ pages of Slick and his gang was a bit much. It was also really, really hard to follow the crazy timeline of the Intermission.
